Étienne Capoue began his professional career in his native France, representing Ligue 1 side Toulouse. The central midfielder played nearly 200 first-team matches after progressing through the youth ranks.
Consistent performances earned him a nomination for Ligue 1's 'Young Player of the Year' award in 2013.
Capoue joined Tottenham Hotspur the next season, but several injuries and stiff competition saw the imposing midfielder make just 24 Premier League appearances for the club.
The Frenchman made the short journey to Watford in the summer of 2015, signing a four-year deal with the Hornets. Capoue’s qualities were evident throughout the 2015/16 season, in which he featured 36 times for the Golden Boys.
Luckless in front of goal that season, he added this string to his bow the next campaign with seven strikes, including on the opening day at Southampton and a crucial winner late in the season against Swansea.
Capoue made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Hornets in 2017/18 – scoring in every competition the Hornets took part in that season, with goals against Bristol City in the EFL Cup and FA Cup, as well as a strike against Bournemouth in the Premier League.
The Graham Taylor OBE Player of the Season for 2018/19, Capoue made himself the first name on the teamsheet for Javi Gracia.
He has been capped seven times for his country, scoring once in a 3-1 victory over Belarus during qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
