Mariappa: “You’ve Got To Grasp It With Both Hands”

Adrian Mariappa is excited at the prospect of another run in the cup, and knows the key to success is having the right mentality when the Golden Boys face Queens Park Rangers this evening.

The match at Loftus Road is a sell-out, and there’s always something special about a night game under the lights, even without the added spice that the FA Cup brings.

“It’s going to be a great FA Cup tie,” Mariappa said, when speaking to the written press. “It’s a local game for us and we know we are going to have to be at it 100 per cent to get through to the next round. We have to approach it in the same way we have with every other cup game.

“I’ve played in FA Cup semi-finals and finals, they are great occasions, but cup runs are something that doesn’t happen every time. When you have the opportunity, you’ve got to grasp it with both hands and try and get as far as you can.”

A lot was made of Javi Gracia making 11 changes against Newcastle United in the last round, but the Hornets ran out 2-0 winners over Premier League opposition.

The idea that it was a second-string XI overlooked the fact that Daryl Janmaat, Craig Cathcart, Adam Masina, Will Hughes, Isaac Success and Andre Gray had all been starters in the league side at some point this season - and Mariappa took that view too.

“I thought it was a bit harsh because if you look at a lot of the names on there they had played most of the season,” said the centre-back. “Earlier on in the season in the League Cup I was part of those 11 changes, and being in that group I can assure you that the attitude is spot on, everyone wants to make an impression and try and get in the team for the league.

“Everyone knows that there is a lot of competition for places, so any opportunity you get you need to take it.”

Mariappa captained the Hornets in the Carabao Cup earlier this season

Again, it comes down to mentality.

“I can only speak about what we do, but everyone here wants to go as far as we can in cup competitions,” said Mariappa. “We all believe that we’ve got a great squad.

“The gaffer is using that squad in the league and the the cups, and when everyone is pulling in the right direction that’s what it comes down to - that attitude. The gaffer won’t let us take our foot off the gas in any game, so as players we are going to give everything we can.”
