Under-23's 24/06/2016

Gartside | “It’s Something I’ve Dreamt About”

LIKE most young players, Nathan Gartside’s first professional contract is a result of talent and a fair share of hard work, and the young stopper is well aware that the latter is going to be essential next year.

The 18-year-old keeper was one of six second-year scholars rewarded with a professional deal this summer, and the Northern Irishman is well aware of the challenges that lay ahead of him next season.

“To earn a professional contract is great, but this is where the real hard work starts now,” he told watfordfc.com.

“Hard work has been massive and you won’t perform week-in week-out if you don’t work hard in training.

“The competition even to get into the Under-21s is huge, so you’ve got to perform well in training every day. Performance levels, intensity and everything else need to be as sharp as possible at all times.

“It’s going to be even harder to try and impress the first-team manager or to try and get out on loan, and the levels are a lot higher so you have to step up your game again.”

Gartside joined the Hornets as a 16-year-old. He's has been lucky enough to work alongside regular number one Heurelho Gomes throughout his time in Hertfordshire, and is keen to acknowledge the role the Brazilian international has had in his development.

"Just look at the season he’s just had. For me, he is one of the best keepers in the Premier League," said Gartside.

"He was our deserved Player of the Year and he’s done wonders for the club since he arrived. His performances show how hard he works every day in training and how dedicated he is.

"But he’s also great at helping myself and the other younger keepers out. He’s always giving us advice and tips to help us try to get to where he is."

Gartside enjoyed a meteoric rise last campaign, as he become the club’s number three keeper in the absence of the injured Rene Gilmartin, warming up at grounds such as the Emirates Stadium, Old Trafford and Stamford Bridge.

While acknowledging what a remarkable season it was, with pre-season due to begin shortly, Gartside was keen to focus on what the 2016/17 campaign will have to offer.

“The excitement is good to get back and I know following the break pre-season is going to be tough, but I’ll enjoy the experience," he said.

“I’ll have to see how it goes, but playing regularly in the Under-21s is my main aim and I’ll maybe see if I can get out on loan.

"The main objective is just to get fit and ready for the new season, and then I'll have to wait and see what happens."
